I have seen interviews with all the Ramones and DeeDee seemed to me to be the most relatable. Joey was too, but Johnny had the classic hard New York vibe. What did Thunders say? “- living in the city, it’ll eat out your heart..”
He seemed to me to have stayed like a kid at heart. That’s cool you knew him. The spirit of the Ramones was as important as anything. Don’t forget music is about fun- having a good time. Deedee seemed like he never took himself too seriously. He never let anything drag him down. It’s a great lesson. New York is a hustle, and somehow he survived it long enough to make an impact, an impression. He did that really well.
I understand. It’s like in True Romance where Elvis talks to Slater’s character. Sometimes I see public wall art like I did yesterday and it said things like “ Stay Strong- Be a Warrior..” words to that effect. It’s interesting where we find encouragement at times. I think we turn to musicians- at least I do for guidance. What would Nick Cave do? Oh he’d put on a dress and party with L7- why not?
I saw that in a documentary about them the other day. Or seeing him with his kids at a skatepark in jeans. We all end up in random everyday circumstances that are part of life. No one gets out of here without stains on their dress shirt.
Sonny… you have a gift for writing. This piece was written in true Ramone fashion, brief and to the point. No need for 3K words, you’re not writing about Churchill instead you are lamenting about mostly monosyllabic poetry. You’re commenting on a person who felt that a 3 minute song was an extended version. As usual you captured your interpretation of this transformative movement of Dee Dee Ramone into this Less is More elocution.
How Dee Dee would have wanted it. I like this platform for the freedom of writing whatever feels right at the time. Sometimes you just wanna share what’s really going on in your brain and heart, or just focus on a little thing that interests you in a long story or someone’s bio. I like what you did here, a lot.
Anyone can look up the Wikipedia entry; an artist and a writer evoke emotion in a few words. Your personal experience and connection said more than an article without emotion, Sonny. Always listen to your gut.
Brilliant article, sitting here with tears in my eyes.
Thank you very much, Sheila. Evoking an emotion from a reader is pretty much all a writer can ask for. Will definitely continue to listen to my gut. Wise words, indeed.
Maybe the urge to delete the more sterile piece was Dee Dee making his long awaited return?
What a beautiful way to think of it.
Inspiration, and comfort given, can show up in strange ways. No analyzation required. Beautifully written.
Thank you, Daniel.

I didn't know Dee Dee. This was a guardian angel type Dee Dee. Apologies if that was unclear in the piece.
